It is 5th June! Today is World Environment Day! #worldenvironmentday
What are you planning to do with your youth to inspire them to #beatplasticpollution today? First, give them hope by taking this global campaign and exploring how to make it local. Knowing how you can take action in small, practical ways in your own community is always a positive starting point. For example, celebrate the bring-your-own reusable bottles, cups, plates and cutlery! Celebrating what is being done right is a key part in making sure it keeps happening, connect it to their lives. In the trailer for Anote’s Ark, you see Anote, the President of the Kiribati Islands at the time in Paris for the Climate Accord. He is speaking to the conference. You can see that everyone has in front of them a single-use plastic water bottle! Argh! The irony! Start a #bringyourown campaign for local events, as well as the big events that you see on the TV. Second, build children and young people’s key thinking skills by playing with ideas for products, which support taking action. This is enabling them to become natural problem-solvers and to think with an entrepreneurial mindset – exactly the skills needed in today’s world for ‘career-security.[1]’ For example, make cloth bags for fruit and veg from old clothes and kit. Make it, sell it, reinvest the income into social change projects in your community. Use these to replace single-use plastic bags in the supermarket. Start today. Watch the video. Make it a project!
