Community & Place‑Based Engagement

Belonging‑led, futures‑informed engagement rooted in place
When to use this community &
place-based engagement
My Community & Place‑Based Engagement is often used when:

  • trust between organisations and communities has been strained or eroded
  • engagement feels extractive, fatigued, or performative
  • place, identity, and lived experience matter deeply to what is unfolding
  • futures feel contested, uncertain, or emotionally charged
  • there is a need to slow down before decisions are made
  • conventional consultation processes are no longer adequate

Use this work before plans are finalised, when relationship and belonging are prerequisites for meaningful participation.
What my futures engagements offer you
My work supports organisations, initiatives, and communities to:
  • move beyond transactional consultation toward relational engagement
  • work with place as a living context, not a backdrop
  • include diverse human and more‑than‑human perspectives
  • build shared understanding before acting
  • imagine futures grounded in care, responsibility, and lived reality
  • stay with complexity without rushing to closure

Rather than asking “How do we get input?”, this work begins with:
“Who are we in relationship with this place — and what does that ask of us?”
Many engagement processes focus on:
  • gathering views
  • validating decisions
  • managing stakeholders

My Community & Place‑Based Engagement practices are different because they:

  • prioritise relationship over extraction
  • treat participation as an ongoing practice, not a one‑off event
  • recognise place as shaping identity, meaning, and possibility
  • work with time, story, and care — not just opinions
  • support communities to imagine futures with, not for them

The aim is not buy‑in, but shared responsibility and belonging.
What this looks like in practice
My approaches include:
  • facilitated community dialogues and circles
  • futures‑led workshops grounded in lived experience
  • intergenerational, interspecies sensemaking spaces
  • place‑based storytelling and imagination practices
  • reflective assemblies or learning encounters
  • engagement processes held over time, rather than as one‑offs

Formats are shaped by context — cultural, ecological, and social — while remaining grounded in the same ethical orientation.
Working with futures and places
I used futures‑informed practices not to predict or plan, but to help you to:
  • explore how the present has been shaped by past choices
  • surface shared fears, hopes, and assumptions about what lies ahead
  • imagine alternative futures without erasing difference or conflict
  • reconnect futures thinking with care for place and more‑than‑human life

Futures become a shared language for understanding change — not a technical tool.
Futuring With Mountains®
Futuring With Mountains® is a specialised expression of this practice.
It explores how mountain landscapes, ecologies, and cultures can:

  • act as teachers for futures thinking
  • disrupt dominant narratives of control, growth, and extraction
  • invite reflection on time, resilience, and care
  • support deeper relationship with more‑than‑human worlds

This work is grounded in listening to place — and treating mountains not as symbols or resources, but as relational partners in imagining futures.

Who this community & place-based engagement is for
I work with:
  • environmental, cultural, and community organisations
  • foundations, trusts, and funders
  • local authorities and public bodies
  • regeneration or transition initiatives
  • place‑based partnerships and networks

Especially where:
  • place matters deeply
  • histories and power dynamics cannot be ignored
  • relationships need time and care to heal or grow
Relationship to other ways of working
My work draws on the same core practice foundations as all Flow In Action work:
  • Working with Relationship — grounding engagement in belonging and trust
  • Practising Futures Literacy — supporting communities to hold uncertainty
  • Cultivating Regenerative Ways of Working — shifting how decisions are made

This is all about supporting communities and places.
This work is not :

  • rapid consultation for compliance
  • engagement used to legitimise predetermined decisions
  • participation reduced to surveys or workshops
  • community innovation theatre
  • extractive listening processes

It is engagement as relationship‑building and shared futures work.
This work is typically commissioned as:

  • a defined engagement process over a set period
  • part of a wider programme or initiative
  • a foundational phase before planning or strategy work

If you are unsure whether this service is the right entry point, an initial conversation can help clarify timing, scope, and approach.

This work takes place slowly enough to care for relationships --
and seriously enough to shape futures that can be lived with.
I'd love to explore how I can support you to create flourishing futures
